Larceny Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of those bourbons that has a lot going for it. It has great taste, great quality, good price, and an interesting story. As the name might imply, Larceny as it is today, was inspired by the story of Bonded Treasury Agent John E. Fitzgerald, who along with other treasury agents, were the only people legally allowed to have keys to the rickhouses distilleries used to age their whiskey. I haven't been able to find much on why this was the case given Prohibition was always taught to me to mean "No alcohol at all" but the folklore surrounding this man and his impeccable taste is vast.
Fitzgerald was known to those who knew to have an "incredibly discerning palate for whiskey," which in this case, is the nicest way I can think of to describe an agent tasked with the inspection of these barrels that was actually taking home (allegedly) quite a bit for himself. It was apparently at a point of such knowledge in the distilleries that upon a worker lifting a barrel that seemed incredibly light in weight for what was normally expected, that and others found lacking weight were referred to as "Fitzgerald's Barrels." Heaven Hill Distillery has been producing this bourbon in honor of this man and his odd legend. A wonderfully warm and bright, wheated bourbon, Larceny is a vanilla and caramel sweet, teeth hugger. There's no Rye in the mash bill, therefore no Rye burn which I appreciate in a bourbon occasionally. It smells like baking spice (which to me is odd considering there's no Rye, but maybe it's more sweet brown sugar I'm thinking of?), hints of timber with slight notes of cream-corn and peach. It tastes excellent, purposefully picked out in barrel batches of less than 200 by their distillers to have a six-year aged taste, to give high quality in taste and smell paying tribute to the great Fitzgerald. I think, even though I obviously didn't know him, between the name and the quality, he'd be impressed and proud to have his name on a bourbon like this. Larceny has become a daily favorite of mine, not only because of its great taste, but a fifth is only around 25 USD where I live making this very fiscally do-able for me. When I drank soda, this was my go to for mixing with Coke and ice. Nowadays, I've since cut soda out of my diet almost completely (aside from maybe a Coke with a burger once a month), and three fingers of Larceny with some ice is my usual "sipper" after a smaller first glass with no ice to appreciate the really well blended flavors going in to this. I highly recommend Larceny to anyone that, like me, loves a wheated bourbon, or just likes sweet bourbon, wheat whiskies, or especially if you're just starting out with bourbons or whiskey and have been wanting to find a middle-ground or branch out between the usual Jack Daniel's or Jim Beam most people start with or know about.
